How to Get to Hainan, China

By | February 3, 2023

You can get to Hainan from almost anywhere in Russia, including Siberia and the Far East. There is no direct flight connection with the island’s airports (with the exception of charter flights from Moscow), several airlines offer flights with connections in different cities of China. Muscovites and Khabarovsk residents have options with one change, while St. Petersburg and residents of other regions have only two. According to petwithsupplies, Hainan is one of the provinces in China.

Those who do not want to spend so much time in flight and do not mind seeing mainland China should pay attention to bus and train routes. You still have to fly, but less – by plane you need to get to Guangzhou, and already there transfer to a train or bus arriving in the capital of the island of Haikou. The path runs through a narrow strait, along which ferries ply. Read more about the cost and routes on the page ” How to get to Hainan “.

A visa can be issued in Hainan upon arrival, but it is not recommended to do so.

Transportation

Transport links are well developed in Hainan: there are two international airports. You can travel around the island by buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws. The roads are good, the main settlements are connected by a ring road. And you can get to the famous Nanwang Monkey Island by cable car. In addition, a railway was laid on Hainan.

Trains

High-speed trains run around the island, leaving for any city in Hainan. The fare is from 50 to 99 CNY. The ticket must be kept until the end of the trip – you will need it at the exit from the station.

Buses

In the resort of Sanya, you can budgetly travel by bus (stops every 500 m). There are two routes – No. 2 and 4, the ticket price is 2 CNY. In addition, minibuses run here (to Nanshan Temple, World’s End Park and Dragon Bay of Asia). Every 20 minutes, there is a bus to Haikou from Sanya (the bus station is located on Jiefang Avenue and operates from 7:00 to 23:00).

Taxis

The most popular way to travel around Hainan among tourists is a taxi. Everything is strict with this transport here: private traders are forbidden to work, payment is strictly according to the meter, cash registers are installed in the cars. You can catch a car right on the street or call by phone, taxi drivers are also on duty at hotels.

Fares vary (depending on the carrier and vehicles). Prices are usually higher at night.

On average, a taxi will cost 10-12 CNY for landing and the first 4 km, and for each subsequent – 1.50-2 CNY. Fares outside built-up areas may increase. Usually the tariff is written on the windshield or rear right door of cars.

Despite the fact that the price of a taxi fare in Hainan is calculated strictly by the meter, it is worth negotiating a fixed amount when traveling long distances (this way you can save money).

Cycle rickshaws and rickshaws

Getting around the island on such an exotic transport is not cheap. The fare depends on the distance and weight of the passenger, it can even cost more than a taxi – about 8-9 CNY per landing and 2 km. It is better to agree on the price in advance, bargaining is appropriate – it is quite possible to throw off 5 CNY. For long trips across the city, such transport is not suitable – even the most enduring rickshaw is unlikely to be able to cover such a distance with a load.

Rent a Car

Renting a car in Hainan is not an easy task. First you need to get a Chinese driver’s license (visitors of the country are issued a temporary one for 30 days) – it is better to use the services of international rental offices. It will take at least a week to complete all the necessary documents.

Drivers and pedestrians should be very careful on the roadway – the traffic is chaotic, the roads are heavily congested, there are serious traffic jams at rush hour. There are a lot of cars in the city, and in the high season there is nowhere to leave the car.

Parking fees range from CNY 20 per hour to CNY 50 per day. Many hotels have their own parking lots, the use of which is included in the price of the room.

You can rent a car directly at Sanya Airport. But it is better to use online booking and place an order in advance at one of the international offices (Avis or Hertz). Prices start from 500 CNY per day (including a driver’s license). Security deposit and insurance are paid separately. For those who do not want to bother with documents, it is possible to take a car with a driver, the pleasure is not cheap – 680-1300 CNY per day.

Communication and Wi-Fi

Mobile communications in major cities and resorts in Hainan work well. Of all the Chinese operators, China Mobile has proven itself the best – excellent communication quality and favorable rates, especially for calls within China. A minute of conversation with Russia will cost approximately 1.99 CNY. China Union and China Telecom are also good, but they catch a little worse far from large settlements.

Prepaid packages are sold in mobile phone shops and kiosks (for registration you will need a passport), where you can top up the balance using a card. The price of the tariff plan is approximately 40 CNY, there will be 10 CNY on the account. Not all packages provide for international communication, the availability of this option should be specified when purchasing, as well as 3G support.

Free Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and cafes, airports and shopping malls. Sanya has its own wireless network (i-Sanya) launched by the local government. To connect to Wi-Fi, you need a Chinese number, which will receive a confirmation code (you must enter it on the registration page).
