What is the UN? – United Nations

It can be said that their definition is the largest international organization involved to cooperate between Nations in humanitarian affairs and human rights, economic and social development, and in international law, striving to maintain peace and security in the world.

The history of the United Nations begins in the middle of World War II when 26 Nations meet and approve the Declaration of United Nations aiming to continue together in the fight against the axis of Alemania-Italia – Japan. United Nations US President coined the term. UU’s then Franklin D.Roosevelt .

It was created in replacement of the so-called League of Nations which had been founded in 1919, since this had not been able to avoid another world war.

Its founders were France, Republic of China, United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, who formed, then the Security Council. There were changes with regard to two countries, one of them was the introduction of the People’s Republic of China instead of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the other the Soviet Union which was succeeded by Russia.

Then after the second world war, in 1945, starts with a total of 51 Member States. And the first session of the General Assembly was held on January 10, 1946.

Two years later, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of human rights, one of the most important in its history is done. There are collected 30 articles on universal civil and political, economic, social and cultural rights. All contributing nations of the United Nations were organized to approve the Declaration. This statement has become a measure to assess the degree of respect for human rights.

In terms of its objectives, as agreed between all the Member States, it is the maintenance of peace and security at international level, the improvement of the standard of living and social progress of the world’s population. Also ensures compliance with human rights and to promote the relations of friendship between the Member countries.

But the truth is that many times, are fruitless efforts to meet them, however has made certain achievements such as the maintenance of peace and internal and external security between the countries, through their missions; reduction of the threat of nuclear war; provision of assistance to victims of conflicts; promotion of democracy; strengthening of international law, better access to drinking water etc.

The structure and organs are located in the city of New York (USA) with the exception of the International Court of Justice, which is located in the Hague (Netherlands) and are composed of the following:

-Secretary General.

-General Assembly.

-Security Council.

-Economic and Social Council.

-Trusteeship Council.

-International Court of Justice.

-Secretary.

Each of them can have subsidiary bodies.

Thus the General Assembly, among many others, is UNICEF (United Nations Children Fund) that deals to ensure compliance with the rights of children throughout the world: among them are non-discrimination, the right to life, survival and development, the right to family, etc. And UNHCR (Office of the of the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees), who has had to charge up to 40 million people in countries around the world.

Dependent on the economic and Social Council include among others: the ILO (International Labour Organization); UNESCO (United Nations education, science and culture organization); FAO (food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).
